TMJ & BITE ASSESSMENT IN PHUKET

Understand the Cause Behind
Jaw Pain, Tooth Wear & Bite Problems

Jaw discomfort, worn teeth, repeated fractures or a bite that feels different can have several possible causes. At Tharish Dental Clinic in Phuket, we assess the teeth, jaw joints, chewing muscles, restorations and oral habits together before recommending treatment. Our approach begins with diagnosis and conservative, reversible care before any permanent change to the teeth or bite is considered. Located in Thalang near Phuket International Airport, Nai Yang and Sakhu.

Care Based on the Cause, Not Just the Symptoms

Jaw pain, tooth wear and bite problems are not all caused by the same condition. Your dentist will assess your symptoms, tooth contacts, jaw movement, muscle tenderness, restorations and relevant habits before recommending monitoring, self-care, a protective appliance, restorative treatment or referral when appropriate.

Understand How Your Teeth Meet & Function Together
OCCLUSAL ANALYSIS IN PHUKET

Understand How Your Teeth Meet & Function Together

An occlusal analysis examines how the upper and lower teeth contact, how the jaw moves and whether tooth wear, fractures or restorations suggest uneven or excessive loading. The purpose is not to automatically adjust the bite. Instead, the assessment helps determine whether your tooth contacts are clinically relevant, whether monitoring is appropriate and whether any treatment should be considered.

No Automatic Adjustment
  • Assesses how the teeth contact during biting and jaw movement
  • Records tooth wear, fractures and restoration damage
  • Evaluates chewing-muscle and jaw-joint tenderness where relevant
  • Helps identify forces that may threaten crowns, fillings or implants
  • Provides a baseline for monitoring changes over time
  • Helps avoid irreversible treatment without a clear clinical reason

TMJ DISORDER TREATMENT IN PHUKET

Start Jaw-Pain Care With Conservative, Reversible Steps

Temporomandibular disorders, or TMDs, include a group of conditions affecting the jaw joints, chewing muscles and surrounding tissues. Symptoms may include jaw pain, stiffness, painful clicking, limited movement, locking or discomfort during chewing. Because jaw pain can have different causes, treatment begins with diagnosis and simple, reversible measures rather than permanent changes to the teeth or bite.

Protect Teeth From Grinding & Clenching Forces
CUSTOM NIGHT GUARD IN PHUKET

Protect Teeth From Grinding & Clenching Forces

Bruxism involves grinding, clenching or jaw activity that may occur while awake or during sleep. When these forces are contributing to tooth wear, chips or damage to dental restorations, a custom-made night guard may be recommended to create a protective barrier between the teeth. A night guard is designed primarily to protect the teeth and restorations. It should not be presented as a guaranteed cure for grinding or jaw pain.

Rebuild Worn or Failing Teeth in a Planned Sequence
BITE REHABILITATION IN PHUKET

Rebuild Worn or Failing Teeth in a Planned Sequence

Severe tooth wear, broken restorations, missing teeth or extensive previous dental work can sometimes make isolated repairs difficult to maintain. Bite rehabilitation coordinates the teeth, restorations and available support as part of a comprehensive restorative plan. This treatment is intended to rebuild structurally compromised teeth when there is a clear restorative need — not as a routine treatment for uncomplicated TMD or jaw pain.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions our patients ask most before their occlusion dentistry consultation.

The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull. TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, refers to a group of conditions affecting the jaw joints, chewing muscles and related structures. People commonly use “TMJ” to describe jaw problems, although TMD is the more accurate term for the disorder itself.

TMD symptoms can include pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles, jaw stiffness, painful clicking, limited movement, locking and discomfort while chewing. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so diagnosis should come before treatment.

Not necessarily. Jaw sounds can occur without pain or functional problems. Treatment is generally based on symptoms, function and clinical findings rather than the presence of clicking alone.

Jaw pain can involve the joints, muscles, habits, injury, headaches and other health conditions. Current evidence does not support permanently changing the bite as a routine treatment for TMD. We assess the full clinical picture and begin with conservative care when appropriate.

Not necessarily. A night guard primarily creates a protective barrier between the teeth and may help reduce damage caused by grinding or clenching. It does not guarantee that the underlying bruxism habit will stop.

Possible signs include tooth wear, chipped teeth, cracked restorations, morning jaw fatigue, tooth sensitivity or reports from a sleeping partner. Some people are unaware that they grind or clench. A dental examination can help identify signs associated with bruxism.

Your dentist may assess tooth contacts, wear patterns, restorations, jaw movement, muscle tenderness and relevant TMJ findings. Photographs, digital scans, imaging or digital bite analysis may be added when they help answer a specific clinical question.

Bite rehabilitation may be considered when multiple teeth are severely worn, fractured, missing or heavily restored and a coordinated restorative plan is required. It should not be used solely as a routine treatment for uncomplicated jaw pain.

Permanent dental procedures that change the bite should not be used routinely as a treatment for TMD. NIDCR states that available evidence does not support occlusal treatments such as tooth grinding, crowns or orthodontic bite alteration as routine TMD treatment, and these approaches can sometimes make symptoms worse.

Arrange prompt dental or medical assessment for symptoms such as significant facial swelling, trauma, sudden inability to open or close the jaw, fever, new numbness or rapidly worsening pain. Difficulty breathing or swallowing or serious neurological symptoms require urgent medical attention.

Yes. Visitors can arrange an assessment for jaw pain, grinding, fractured teeth or bite concerns. If you have limited time in Phuket, tell our team your departure date so that diagnostic assessment and any appropriate short-term care can be planned accordingly.
